Life Advice from A Louis Vuitton Client Advisor

Picture it: Gwen and I were walking down the streets of SoHo on a chilly and cloudy December afternoon, when we decided to stop in at Louis Vuitton. We’ve always admired the stunning haute couture and timeless elegance of this iconic brand.

After getting checked in, we were greeted by this lovely gentleman named Kirk, whose spirit was bright and confident, on par with the luxurious opulence of the store.

We connected with him immediately. We chatted about our vacation in the city, as well as our goals to move here in the future. In between the intoxicating fragrances we sampled and the exquisitely detailed handbags we perused, Kirk so kindly shared some encouraging life advice with us.

Formal education isn’t necessary; connections are more valuable

Working in luxury retail, Kirk is thriving and getting to help and connect with successful people every day, despite not having received the traditional college education. Instead, he’s seen firsthand that connections are what will set you apart in your career. He gave the example that two people could apply for the same position – one could have the perfect education and degree, but if the other person knows someone at the company, they’re more likely to receive that opportunity because of that connection. The best part? You can make connections anywhere, anytime. I know how difficult it is to ask for someone’s time or for an introduction, but nevertheless, I encourage you to be courageous and ask! Remember, people love to help other people!

Everyone’s vision of success is different – go after what you want

Some people want to go to college, others want to be an entrepreneur, others want to be a stay at home mom – and they’re all amazing options! I told him that I want to move to New York because it’s a place of endless inspiration for me and just lights me up. He encouraged us to go after what we personally want, no matter what.

It starts with your mindset

Although Kirk and I have different personal journeys, I completely concur with all of the advice he shared. The common denominator is that it all starts with your mindset. Kirk reassured us that we can literally accomplish anything that we want – the fact that a total stranger expressed this much faith in our dreams left us with a glow of confidence that lasted the rest of the evening.

Later, while walking to dinner and reflecting on our conversation, I made a rather abstract connection. The sophistication and prestige that goes into each LV piece can be extrapolated into personal development. I realized we should treat our mindsets and bodies with that same level of expert care. That we should intentionally refine our mindset, and take care of ourselves, just as Le Maison carefully crafts their pieces.

What’s left? An incredible and powerful piece of artistry and a thing of beauty that’s admired by many. (Aka – you!) I hope this makes sense.

The icing on the cake is that this interaction happened on the Gemini full moon. According to Gwen, it was quite the serendipitous day for a major hit of career motivation, as well as a reminder of the importance of building relationships and connections.

Thank you, Kirk! I hope we get to see you again. I absolutely love little moments like this that make me smile and truly fill my heart with joy. Also, another special thank you to Sam for inspiring me to turn this experience into a post.
